Watching Urban Gujarati movies over Bollywood is becoming a new normal. And as a Gujarati, It’s a proud feeling. Year by year , Number of releases keeps increasing. Gujarati Entertainment industry has become more mainstream now , young talent trying their hands on and trying to fit themselves in wherever possible. They are getting equipped with latest technology advancements, VFXs, Locations, Language, resources and utilizing social media presence. This change we are witnessing due to the movies that performed extremely well on Box Office and found a place in the heart of audience.

Kevi Rite Jaish (2012)
Kevi Rite Jaish was the first gujarati movie in last two decades that succeeded in meeting the expectations of urban audience and took gujarati movie industry by storm. The movie had it all : a good story, appreciable acting from new talent, some veterans of Bollywood and screenplay, dop to cop up the Bollywood. It showed aspirations of wannabe US migrant, language that amdavadis use in real life, locations to co-relate and the truth of Immigration process and fake agencies. Film got mere screens on its release day but managed to cross boundaries through word of mouth appreciation and promotion. Movie was directed by Abhishek Jain who had closely worked with Sanjay Leela Bhanshali earlier. This movie gave a rise of hope to revive Gujarati Cinema.
Bey Yaar (2014)
There was no exceptional gujarati movie in 2013 as It was still high risk to produce big budget gujarati movie and there was lack of knowledge on branding, promotion of film and distribution part. Amidst this, Bey Yaar released in 2014 directed by Abhishek Jain. Bey Yaar featured Darshan Jariwala, Manoj Joshi, Divyang Thakkar and Pratik Gandhi. The story of two friends Chako and Tino who desperately wanted to earn big money in quick time, putting their moral values at stake and end up losing their pride and integrity by selling a master piece gifted to Chaka’s Dad by M.F. Hussain. They get trapped by Exhibitor. They finally managed to get it back by making plan against him. Story was very unique and was applauded by critics as well. Film ran for 50 weeks in theatres. The film was screened at New York Indian Film Festival which made it the first ever Gujarati film to do so.
Chello Divas (2015)
Chello Divas written and directed by Krishnadev Yagnik was released in the November 2015. It can be considered as first comedy-centric urban gujarati movie. Story of 8 friends, their college life that every student aspire to live like. The local slangs, locations, funny situations, romances and drama. The movie had no story to tell but It had punch lines starting till end to make you laugh. You cannot take your eye away from the screen. Impeccable acting made Malhar Thakar (Vicky), Mitra Gadhvi (Loy) , Janki Bodiwala (Pooja), Mayur Chauhan (Nario) a celebrity overnight. Well!! Perseverance pays off. Every Gujarati youngster imitates their action and slang. The most entertaining comedy movie till date is this.
Gujjubhai The Great (2015)
Gujjubhai The Great was a 2015 Gujarati comedy film directed by Ishaan Randeria produced by Devendra N. Patel with Siddharth Randeria Productions. Siddharth Randeria is renowned name due to his popular plays like Lage raho Gujjubhai, Gujjubhai a gajavyu gaam etc. Movie was adopted from stage play Gujjubhai a gajavyu gaam. The film starred Siddharth Randeria, Jimit Trivedi, Swati Shah, Dharmesh Vyas in lead roles. Those actors already did theatre for many years as no doubt their performance was loved by audience on big screen as well. It one of the most popular films so far. The music was exceptional and made pretty good contribution to Gujarati Cinema.
Romance Complicated (2016)
Romance complicated – RomCom was released in early 2k16. Movie was directed by Dhwani Gautam and produced by Luminescence Films. It was first movie that was shot at foreign locations. It showed the amazing sights of Ahmedabad and U.S.A at its best. The music tracks with singers like Sonu Nigam, Neeraj Shreedhar, Shreya Ghoshal and composition by Darshan Rawal, The Indian Raw Star Fame was mesmerizing. Music was widely applauded by the audience and film direction not any lesser compared to Bollywood movies. It was the first of its kind. New Film makers got inspired to move out of comfort zone risking a bit and make the content look rich by investing more.
These movies has thus far proved that Film makers have to try out new things and focus on every aspect the film not only the production with advance technology and content but adequate branding, social media presence and to reaching out to people in every possible manner.
